Who We Are
The Council of NGOs in Zambia is a statutory body under the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, established under the NGOs Act No. 16 of 2009. The Act establishes a Zambia Congress of Non-Governmental Organizations which shall be a collective forum of all organizations registered under the Act. The Congress elects a twelve-member Council which is responsible for the management of the affairs of the Congress. The first CNGOs was elected in December 2012 at the first ever held Zambia Congress of NGOs using thematic areas. No secondment of any NGO to the NGO Registration Board due to the Contention on the NGO Act No 16, 2009. The second Zambia Congress of NGOs held in Oct, 2018 which elected the 2nd set of Council members using provinces.
The functions of the Council as per Section 31 of the NGO Act are to—
- Develop, adopt and administer the Code of Conduct for Non-Governmental Organisations;
- Facilitate and coordinate the work of non-governmental organisations operating in Zambia;
- Conduct Capacity Building for NGOs
- Spearhead the holding of the NGO Congress in partnership with MCDSS
- Facilitate conflict resolution within and between NGOs
- Document and Publicize best practices
- Perform any other functions relevant for purposes of this Act as the Congress may determine.
